Surface, surface, surface... names and descriptors always pale and skin-like and suggestive, surface always rich and deep, endless, provocative. But the descriptors give context and even narrative. A mossy snag in the Ohanapecosh old growth forest, an ice patch on the Emmons glacier, old logging or mining equipment becoming a rusted part of the landscape above the Glacier Basin back country campground, clouds in the basin below Burroughs mountain where the wind comes from the north and south and fingers of fog reach and grope at one another, ice on the edge of a snowfield on Sourdough ridge glinting red in the sunrise.
